Q. Why is design an important part of revitalizing communities?
Revitalizing communities through design starts with architecture that is created through community conversation and sharing. Community involvement in the design process can result in a better place and can foster new community pride. Well-designed communities then become the places where people want to live and invest in the future.
Q. What has been most surprising, rewarding, or fun about working on a project with the Collaborative?
The original architecture of a storefront façade revitalization project is often concealed beneath layers of vinyl or aluminum siding and trim resulting in a complete loss of architectural character and scale. I enjoy researching the original architectural details and working with the building owner to create a design that will enable them to restore and revitalize the building.
Q. What do you love most about Philly?
Philly is one of my favorite American cities because of its rich historic architecture, fine museums and great dining options. Extensive public transits links the suburbs with pedestrian-friendly Center City. The urban designers, planners and architects of historic Philadelphia created a rich environment of buildings, squares, streets, parks and waterfront that make Philly one of America’s great cities.
