Why is design an important part of revitalizing communities?
As designers and planners, we have a unique opportunity to impact the communities in which people live, work and grow. The built environment has a tremendous impact on our society's health: a strong connection to neighborhood community fosters a sense of belonging, as well as by providing access to educational, economic and social opportunities. Working with the Collaborative is a way for designers support the growth of our city's neighborhoods while ensuring that those directly affected by our work are able to contribute to how their own community is shaped over time.
What has been most surprising, rewarding, or fun about your Collaborative experience?
I keep coming back! Attending the grant reviews are like sitting in on crits for project types I am not usually exposed to in my professional life - it's been great to get to provide my real-life knowledge as well as learning a little bit about other areas of design.
What do you love most about Philadelphia?
Variety! Where else can I ride my bike from the country's oldest street to the largest park within city limits in less than a half hour! We have so much culture to access, food to eat and new places to explore. Not only that, the city is constantly evolving - I'm so proud of us!
