In preparation for planned renovations at Panati Rec Center as part of Philadelphia’s Rebuild program, Collaborative volunteers worked with local teens to generate ideas that could be translated into architectural design strategies for a re-envisioned afterschool learning space. Using AIA Philadelphia/Center for Architecture’s Architecture in Education (AIE) curriculum, volunteers introduced students to the profession of architecture and design through weekly meetings that resulted in ideas for an improved Rec Center that includes space for exercise, vocational training, a maker-space and tech hub.
"Design gives the communities the power to take ownership and create the solutions they want to see."
“The Collaborative is my chance to do a broader range of project types and work with different teams.”
"When you piece together distinct stories it allows for you to understand an individual's understanding of place. As a result, the boundaries of space are no longer just physical because a responsibility is added towards the collective memory that makes a place."
“Design gives people a tool to be active in the decisions of their community and see the impact it can have.”
