The Collaborative supported an effort by Friends Center to evaluate one of the three buildings that surround its gracious brick courtyard. Through the design process, stakeholders reached a consensus to preserve the mid-19th century building and make it more functional and accessible. Space programming, conceptual design, and an opinion of probable costs will guide renovations to expand day care services or tenant space—and add a new accessible entrance with a lobby, elevator, and front stoop.
"The built environment has a tremendous impact on our society's health: a strong connection to neighborhood community fosters a sense of belonging, as well as by providing access to educational, economic and social opportunities. Working with the Collaborative is a way for designers [to] support the growth of our city's neighborhoods while ensuring that those directly affected by our work are able to contribute to how their own community is shaped over time."
“It was amazing how everyone jumped in.”
In Philadelphia, you need to engage many different groups of people into what’s going to be the future of the city."
“I appreciated making new friends in the field while making something valuable to our community and at the same time, having fun!”
"The Collaborative is very organized and has equally motivated members. It makes all the difference for projects."
