The Delaware Valley Green Building Council is hosting its first student design competition in 2005. Students are to design a "green" community center, part of a neighborhood gateway plan developed by the Design Collaborative for Tioga United. The Collaborative worked with Tioga United in 2003 to create a cluster of community open space and recreational facilities at 20th and Tioga Streets, a key entry point into the neighborhood.
Over 150 undergraduate students from the region's design, construction, and engineering programs will participate. Through DVGBC's competition, they will learn about the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) criteria, sustainable design strategies, and the importance of multi-disciplinary collaboration. The Community Design Collaborative of AIA Philadelphia is a cosponsor of the competition.
The competition kicks off on Saturday, January 22 and Sunday, January 23 with a series of workshops and a site visit. On Saturday, a Design Collaborative project team led by Susan Maxman & Partners will present a sustainable design case study on the Overbrook Environmental Education Center. The team will be joined by Jerome Shabazz, President of JASTECH Development Services, Inc., future developer of the center and an advocate for urban environmentalism.
On Sunday, students will visit Tioga for a presentation on the Tioga Gateway Plan by the Design Collaborative's volunteer team and Verna Brown-Tyner of Tioga United. The presentation will be followed by tours to the competition site and surrounding neighborhood led by community representatives.
William Reed, AIA, of Natural Logic, Paul Stoller of Atelier Ten, and Margie Ruddick of Wallace Roberts & Todd will judge the competition. This "green ribbon" panel will also present awards and take part in a public conversation about sustainable design at the Design Collaborative's Spring Event on Wednesday, April 27.
