Old Pine Community Center

Modifications for Accessibility

Friday Architects/Planners, Inc., designed the Old Pine Community Center at 4th and Lombard Streets in 1977. Twenty-five years later, Don Matzkin, a Principal at Friday Architects, got to work on the center again as a volunteer with the Community Design Collaborative.

In the seventies, Old Pine received recognition for its community-friendly design and progressive approach to handicapped accessibility. By today's standards, however, the center no longer a leader in accessibility. The second floor can only be reached by a flight of stairs.

Making the second floor accessible took some thought because installing an elevator was not an option. The volunteer team recommended a vertical platform lift, which takes up less space than an elevator and can be used to transport people between first and second floors. The volunteers also drew up a plan reconfiguring the second floor restrooms to meet new accessibility standards and make room for the lift.

Volunteers: Don Matzkin, AIA, Registered Architect, Lauren Ulmer, Intern Architect.

Value of Services: $13,226

"It is fabulous to revisit this favorite early project. Especially to see it both functioning and growing so well, and to be an integral part of the center’s future."
