School District of Philadelphia: Campus Parks Initiative

Conceptual Landscape Design

Some Philadelphia's schoolyards look more like parking lots than play spaces—and Paul Vallas, CEO of the School District of Philadelphia, wants to change that. In 2002, Vallas inaugurated the Campus Parks Initiative to fund improvements to schoolyards in Philadelphia.

The Community Design Collaborative has been helping schools and communities illustrate their ideas for outdoor learning environments and play spaces. The renderings and site plans produced by Collaborative volunteers will be used to raise funding for the Initiative's landscape improvement projects.

At Leidy Elementary School in East Parkside, the Collaborative's volunteers created a conceptual landscape design by observing the children at play and working with a community task force. The Leidy project was done in partnership with the Architecture in Education Program, which brings practicing architects into the classroom.

Volunteers: Jayne Spector, Registered Landscape Architect; Susan Edens, Landscape Architectural Designer; Michael Spain, Intern Architect; Betsy Caesar, Playground Consultant; and Michael Funk, Cost Estimator.

Value of Services: $17,880

Hands-on projects with Architecure in Education helped Leidy fourth graders show the kinds of outdoor activities they craved and express their hopes for a more fun, welcoming school exterior.
