Minority Arts Resource Council

Conceptual Design for a Stabilized Ruin

The Minority Arts Resource Council is a North Philadelphia nonprofit organization that develops and promotes local artists of diverse cultures. It shares a property line with the carriage house of the demolished Widener Mansion. Even though the roof has been missing for over fifteen years, the walls of this beautifully-detailed carriage house remain intact.

Minority Arts became an advocate for preserving the carriage house in 2001, when the City of Philadelphia posted it with a notice for demolition. The arts organization wants to reuse the structure as an outdoor classroom, gallery, and performance space. To save the building, Minority Arts had to show city officials that it had a game plan for stabilization and reuse.

Collaborative volunteers advised Minority Arts on how to stabilize the structure. The volunteers also did a conceptual design showing how the nonprofit's cultural programs could fit inside the carriage house shell. Finally, the Collaboartive estimated stabilization and improvement costs for the nonprofit.

"Designing the carriage house shell to be a safe and beautiful place was our job. But the Minority Arts Resource Council has the more important task—filling the space with meaning.""."
— Joshua Daniel, Volunteer
