The Association for the Preservation of Abandoned Jewish Cemeteries

Conceptual Landscape Design

The Association for the Preservation of Abandoned Jewish Cemeteries (APAJC) provides stewardship for historic Jewish cemeteries in the Philadelphia area. Their first focus has been the Hebrew Mutual Cemetery, a vandalized burial ground tucked behind a rowhouse block in Southwest Philadelphia.

The nonprofit's first instinct was to secure the burial ground by paving and walling it. The Collaborative's volunteers convinced APAJC to create a partially enclosed green space instead-- it would be less expensive, win more community support, and attract more funding. Indeed, "the neighbors were impressed that the design included some open space for the neighborhood" at a community meeting last summer, recalls Stanley Barer of APAJC.

APAJC has forged ahead with fundraising for Hebrew Mutual Cemetery. To date, the nonprofit has raised nearly $30,000 towards the first phase of the cemetery restoration project..

Volunteers: Kim Douglas, Jeff DiRomaldo, Michael Funk, Liz Harvey, Karen Skafte, ASLA.

Value of Services: $10,000

Headstones salvaged from the vandalized cemetery would be integrated into a memorial wall.

"Our grant was based entirely on the photos, drawings, and cost estimates the Collaborative did. Well done!"
